The score of this national level exam is mandatory for all the government and medical colleges offering MBBS and BDS courses except the institutions established through the parliament act.  In that regard, 15% of the medical seats will be allotted under All India Quota except the states of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir. Furthermore, 85% of the states will be filled under State Government Quota via counselling.

It is a pen and paper based exam and the syllabus of the exam is designed and revised from time to time with respect to the board syllabus, as prescribed by the MCI. The paper comprises of 45 objective type questions each from Physics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology carrying 4 marks for each correct answer and -1 for a wrong answer.
