You also need the physical skills, as you’d expect a steady hand is key and keeping calm under pressure. If you feel you would be well suited then ensure you take the relevant classes at high school such as chemistry, physics, biology, math and health.  You must then obtain a bachelors degree that includes the required science coursework, lots of students who go in to dentistry do science as a major.

Once you have obtained your bachelors degree the next stage is to pass the ‘Dental Admissions Test’ (DAT), you have to pay a fee to do the test and must schedule one at the Prometric Test Center. If you require more information on locations or prices then visit the American Dental Association (ADA) website. The next step is to apply to a dental school, this is the key step in becoming a dentist and the better the school you get in to the better your chances are of landing a top job at a big dental surgery when you graduate. The basics to look out for with you choose your dental school is that it is accredited by the ADA’s commission on dental accreditation.

You will be at dental school for around 4 years and in the last 2 years  you will actually be working in hospitals under the supervision of an experienced dentist, this is to give you an idea of what it is like to actually treat someone before you finish your education and get some confidence in your ability. When you complete this you will have graduated with a degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DDM). After this you must decide where you want to work and pass that states licensing test, this includes a practical examination and must be obtained to practice dentistry in that state.

Finally, you can choose your speciality; you may want to specialize in paediatric dentistry, orthondistry, maxillofacial dentistry or cosmetic dentistry. It all depends on your drive and the money you want to earn. When you choose your speciality you must go to a private practice and learn your craft there, for example, if you wanted to be a cosmetic dentist then you could start working at ultra smile and eventually one day open your own practice up.
